Here I am blogging to You and the world in my underwear in the early morning. Thank You for the passage in Luke 1:46-55 I read this morning, which some people call the Magnificat:
46 Mary responded, “Oh, how I praise the Lord. 47 How I rejoice in God my Savior! 48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and now generation after generation will call me blessed. 49 For he, the Mighty One, is holy, and he has done great things for me. 50 His mercy goes on from generation to generation, to all who fear him. 51 His mighty arm does tremendous things! How he scatters the proud and haughty ones! 52 He has taken princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands. 54 And how he has helped his servant Israel! He has not forgotten his promise to be merciful. (NLT)
Now it appears that Mary is identifying herself with the “poor” of society, and saying that You take special care of this particular group of people. On the other hand, the rulers of society get scattered, yanked from their thrones and sent away empty-handed. Now I know that You want us to hate no one, and I try not to by Your power and strength, but yes, I can admit that I get a bit giddy thinking about Your treatment of the corporations and politicians and religios who create conditions that make it difficult for others to survive.
I’m reading The Armageddon Factor: The Rise of Christian Nationalism in Canada by Marci McDonald, and plan to read The God Strategy: How Religion Became a Political Weapon in America by David Domke and Kevin Coe. Now I’m trying to stay positive as I read all about the Harpers and Bushes of this world, but I do admit that I am shocked, profoundly shaken. What a wake-up call to see how both nations of Turtle Island, a First Nations’ term for North America, have been duped into following a debased form of religion that has no relation to Your words except to twist them to further benefit the wealthy classes.
Having been steeped in evangelical tradition for many years, Lord, I can say that I am amazed to see how Your kindness can be turned into a weapon to oppress First Nations, Iraqis, Afghanis, minorities and any others who stand in the way of corporate strategies. Politicians and religious leaders have been co-opting Your words and claim to have been called by You. Other than Yahweh, I wonder which God they serve. Wasn’t there another god called “Mammon” mentioned somewhere in the sacred scriptures?…….
Yes, I know that I will have a lot of explaining to do to my dear friends. At first they may think I’m a traitor, or deranged, or succumbing to the dark ideologies of this world. In actual fact, it has been a process over the years of searching the scriptures and experiencing life on this planet that leads me to these present conclusions. I hope my friends will understand. And I hope that others will join me in abandoning the religion of Mammon and power in order to follow the real Yeshua, the one who heals the sick, condemns the Pharisees and Herods of this world, and stands on the side of the poor.
This is not a socialist Jesus, a Marxist Jesus, a deconstructionist Jesus, a postmodern Jesus, an anarchist Jesus, a Democrat or NDP Jesus, a liberal theology Jesus, a liberation theology Jesus, a radical or extremist Jesus. The Messiah whom You sent to bring light to the world is Your representative:
– holy, sacred, set apart, special
– He does great things for His people, esp. the poor
– He has mercy on multiple generations of those who revere Him
– He has a powerful arm that needs no time in the gym
– THE REVERSAL OF FORTUNE: He disperses the arrogant wealthy people and dethrones unscrupulous leaders. He raises up the downtrodden, those who are barely making it in this present economy and political system. He satisfies hungry people and sends the rich away with nothing.
– He helps the real “Israel”, the humble ones who truly follow Him, not the so-called nation made up of people who join the Western countries in rewarding the rich and oppressing the poor.
Anyways, sorry for soapboxing so much this morning, Lord. I hope You enjoy Your day, and I expect that I will too. Thanks again for helping me escape the religion of Christianity, esp. evangelicalism but also Catholicism, Orthodoxy and the 1000s of sects. Thanks for leading others in the same direction, so that small pockets of people all over Turtle Island can start resisting the current negative strains of this culture, and stand on the side of the poor as You asked us to in the following verses:
Matthew 25:31 – 46, NLT:
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate them as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. 34 Then the King will say to those on the right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ 37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ 40 And the King will tell them, ‘I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ 41 “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his demons! 42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me anything to drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me no clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ 44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ 45 And he will answer, ‘I assure you, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’ 46 And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”
James 1: 26 – 27 NLT:
26 If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are just fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. 27 Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us.
And thanks that You allow me to blog my prayers….even in my underwear!
